Today I will talk you about virtual machines. Maybe this is new for you: virtual machines are enviroments in what we can emule hardware like a Personal Computer in this way we can run a Operating System inside it. The development of this enviroments has been so big that even we can install many virtual machines inside a PC, and if your hardware support it - I speak about processor and memory - you can execute them at the same time, even set up in network as they were real machines.
These virtual enviroments are frequently used now in many corporate enviroments of several modes. They has so many advantages that I will try to describe some of them:
1. You can install the virtual machine inside a PC and move it to other PC’s, in this way you don’t need to install operating system in every PC with virtual machine.
2. You can use virtual machines to test all kind of software without worry to damage you operating system, no data loss. I will show how to execute malicious software and analize its behaviour inside virtual machine without any risk for the real machine.
3. You can create Snapshots, they act like Norton Ghost Images. We can restore a previous saved state whenever we want after test software, viruses and trojans in virtual machines.
4. You can set up the virtual machines to share resources in your network, etc, etc.
VMWARE:
VMWare is commercial software and you have to buy it :(. But you can use it using trial version. This enterprise is specialist developing virtualization software. There are many types, I will use now VMWare WorkStation 6.0. Trial Version expires in a time and you must purchase a license to continue using it 
. The advantages of this software and I like them are: Skill to set up network in several modes: local, bridge, Nat and No Connection modes. Also you can set up resources: amount of memory to use, disk space, processor, CD, Diskette, sound, video and network you want to use with the created virtual machine. You can install several Operating Systems: all Microsoft Operating System family, since DOS up to Windows Vista, Linux family even Solaris and * BSD. You can download pre-installed operating system image, so you don’t need to install all Operating System.
Let’s proceed to describe installation process:
1. Download VMWare Workstation from www.vmware.com .
2. Once downloaded the Installer, we execute it.
Once Operating System reboot, we can see at Network Connections that appears 2 new virtual network adapters:
These adapters will let us connect virtual machines with our real machine or even network, using Bridge mode to connect to your local network like it were other PC in your network, NAT mode, Only host and No network connection mode.
Now, once program started, we proceed to create a new virtual machine:
Here you can see many types of Operating Systems you can install.
Now we choose to Install Windows XP Professional, and select the path where will be stored virtual machine files. I must to say that these file have .vm* extension and only you can use them using VMworkstation program or any VMware Enterprise Software.
Now we choose network mode, in this case we choose Bridged Mode. In this way, our created virtual machine will be like other computer inside our network. For example if our local network number is 192.168.1.0 we must set up the virtual machine with any address like 192.168.1.X to have access to network resources and/or internet.
Now we set up amount of disk space we want to asign to virtual machine. If you choose Allocate Space Now Option: automatically will setup a fixed space with 2 GB in virtual disk drive. But if you choose not use this option(used in this case) virtual machine disk space grow up while you install Operating system and programs.
Once virtual machine creation is finished, we can set up options to asign resources to the virtual machine clicking on Edit Virtual Machine Settings option .
Here we can set up: amount of memory, use phisical CD reader or ISO images, use Diskette or Diskette image, Network connection mode, USB enable, enable sound, set up video and asign number of processor to use for virtual machine.
Notice that using ISO images is very usefull because is possible that sometimes your CD ROM drive is being used by another application, but if you have ISO Images you can even install operating systems with these ISO images.
Let’s proceed to put a Windows XP Professional CD-ROM installer on the CD-ROM drive.
Now let’s start virtual machine clicking on Start this virtual Machine.
You can see at the next image, the virtual machine has its own CMOS Setup just like a real machine!. You can access there too and test without fear to damage anything.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Once you start the virtual machine y click inside virtual machine window you will see the mouse pointer is trapped inside the virtual machine window. To go back to real machine just press: CTRL+ALT keys.
Next is well known, all Windows XP Professional Installation Process. 
Almost ready.
Now we proceed to install VMWare Tools, it contains drivers for virtual machine resources to enhance perfomance.
USING SNAPSHOTS IN VMWARE:
As I commented early, Snaphots let us to return a previous saved state of virtual machine.
Let us make a test. Remember that our virtual machine is “new” and has operating system installed, drivers, no more. As we know, we would like to keep this state, but not always is in that way. Worst if we test malicious software there.
In real systems there is software to make this snapshots. Programas like Norton Ghost and others I don’t remember right now :$.
In this cases, when we use the virtual machine, we don’t just need any software. Just let’s go to Option enmarked with red color circle: Take snapshot of virtual machine. 
After to make click, a window is opened, there we can write a descriptive name for our snapshot. We are going to make this snapshot because intentionally we are going to delete a system file: ntlr. This file is necessary to load the operating system. If this file is not present we must reinstall the operating system to have again our fully O.S. operating.
Let us put a name to our snapshot, before to destroy the system (Antes de destruir el sistema)(Spanish :D). And click in OK.
Then begins snapshot creation process. 
Once the snaphot is created, in the virtual machine we go to Windows Explorer , and at Folder Options we activate: See system and hidden files. Then we go to C drive and select and delete NTLDR file. If we delete this file Windows will not load anymore.
So, we make this inside the virtual machine.
Once this file is deleted, let’s restart the virtual machine and see what happen.
Ouch!!
Do not worry , remember our SNAPSHOT, let’s restore it!.
Select state we want to recover.
Restore process begins: 
Ready!!, we have successfully restored the previous state just making a few clicks.
VIRTUAL PC:
VirtualPC is software provided by Microsoft, and you can download here.
It has too the hability to create Snapshots and even you can create diferential hard disk drives. This mean that you can create a partition that contains the operating system and use a diferential disk where is stored all software installed on the Operating System. Making this, we preserve the Operating System in its initial state.
